The Classic Volkswagen Beetle

No matter how many dream cars I write about, in the end everything always, always ends up right back to the classic Volkswagen Beetle.

It could be because it would be the most affordable and the easiest to obtain. Parts might be hard to come by, but with the number of automotive surplus stores in the Metro Manila area, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to find the right parts.

But why the Beetle? Considering I hated it as a child, I don't know either. Maybe it's a symbol of how I should live my life. How can I see this? Let's just say I guess it's about the destination. It's about having a blast getting to where you want to go and enjoying the trip.

I don't know how true that applies now, but whenever I dream of going on long road trips around Luzon I always imagine it being done inside a classic Beetle (converted to a Baja Bug, but still). Cruising along at a decent pace, where you can still enjoy the scenery as you go by. I guess this is as romantic as I can get.

Time for a Change

It's time for a change. Signs are everywhere. I have no idea what change it should be, but it's time.

I guess I'm just too mentally weak to deal with life. One small hiccup ends up turning into a catastrophe the way I handle things. It's all on me. It is no one's fault but mine, and try as I might to rise above myself, I also keep dragging me down.

It's funny. I abhor change. I want the status quo to remain. Even if I try to slowly change, to gently steer the course of my life to better things, something always, always drags me back to the path I am most comfortable with.

For you religious types who say God will help, He doesn't. I've been praying, begging Him to help me, and to do it directly. None of those "this is a test from God to improve myself" ways. None of those mysterious ways. Because they don't help. And don't tell me otherwise because you are not walking my path.

I hate it. I hate my path. This path. It sucks. It isn't good for me or anyone else. I'm just wasting oxygen and resources. And try as I might to improve myself, I keep going back.

It just sucks.

Papal Visit Thoughts

I've done an initial post about the Pope's visit to the Philippines. You all know that I wasn't too enthusiastic about losing out on three days worth of salary. You also know that I thought it was too early in the year to have a long holiday. My opinions about what I wrote stand true up to now.

However, I am a Roman Catholic. And I was very happy that he visited.

Pope Francis is a role model to everyone, not just Catholics. He has tried to bridge religious differences, cultural differences, and economic differences. He teaches us all how to be good human beings to everyone, not just to people who share our faith. And that is a very important lesson that I hope will stick with everyone until the day they die.

There is one Filipino trait called "ningas kugon." What it basically means is that they're commitment or desire over something they are very enthusiastic at in the beginning eventually wanes and dies out. I honestly hope and pray (yes, I pray) that everyone who was affected positively by Pope Francis will change for the better, and that change will be for good. Not just for a few days.

I also hope that the discipline and compassion we all showed during his visit will be around for good. I've seen it happen with my own eyes, and I know we are capable of doing it. Now I hope we continue doing this. Even if we don't have special guests in the country.

Finally I hope we lessen our tendencies to be judgmental. I've already seen a few articles online about criticisms during the Papal Visit. They could be criticisms towards government officials, to loud emcees, or to how crowd control was handled. There are some things better kept to ourselves instead of broadcasting it to everyone.

On a more personal note, while I did choose not to make an effort to personally see His Holiness, I still felt his presence and his influence one way or another. I will admit that I have not been a model Catholic, but after hearing Pope Francis' words and seeing his actions on TV, I admit I do want to improve myself for good, and not because I'm still feeling holy right now.

TL;DR - Great experience, I hope everyone becomes better human beings (not just better Catholics) and doesn't revert back to old, bad habits.

Overdue Posts

I should be posting more, and sadly I haven't.

I'm getting some ideas from my mom's blog. Maybe I should post my food and travel adventures. I'll hopefully be able to use the upcoming long holiday, thanks to the Papal visit, to do some blogging.

I need to get my writing juices flowing.
