1266 - Are EVs Really Worth It?

I've been seeing a lot more EVs on Metro Manila roads. Not just the EV taxis but private vehicles as well. And I've been seeing a lot more brands, not just the popular ones like BYD and VinFast.

It's really getting me thinking if they are really worth it? Not just in savings from gas prices, but also in maintenance and parts. I've been seeing horror stories on social media about how some companies don't have parts for maintenance, and some are recommending really "bullshit" maintenance schedules similar to internal combustion cars. So basically every six months. For context I've heard some EV brands require annual maintenance only.

Then you've got special tires for EVs because the "normal" tires won't handle the torque of the electric motors. I don't know how much these tires cost but if they wear out faster then that is also a cause for concern.

You've also got the looming battery replacement when, not if, you need them replaced. I've heard some cars don't need a replacement for years so hopefully by the time you need yours replaced the costs of the batteries go down.

Honestly I'm still curious about EVs, and I do think they have their place. I'm just very wary and skeptical of them. Basically I'd rather choose hybrids, not plug-in hybrids, instead.

Out.
